The Feilding Star. THUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1892. The New Lords

"•" The appointments made to the Legislative Council have met with the almost unanimous approval of the press of the colony. That there should be dissatisfaction among those few hundreds of persons who fondly hoped to find themselves among the chosen ones, can easily be understood. In this connection, we think it is somewhat singular that this part of the colony should J have been overlooked altogether, while others should apparently be " doublebanked." No doubt the explanation is to be found in the fact that few suitable mem of "the right color" were available here whose selection would not have excited that unfavorable criticism which has now been avoided. Yet it appears to us that if at least one man had been appointed from their supporters on this Coast the hands of the Government party would have been strengthened considerably, and, therefore, if^our opinion is well-founded, an error of judgment has been committed. Every mistake of this kind militates against Ministerial popularity, especially as most pronounced Liberals have a very lively appreciation of the pleasures of getting a share of the "loaves and fishes." Complaints, "not loud but deep," have been heard in Palmerston North, while 1 threats of vengeance have been uttered in Wanganui of dreadful enough portent to make even the ruddy cheek of Mr Seddon turn pale. The only thing that the disappointed ones can now do is to accept the inevitable. Time will ease the smart of their present wounds, and as their pains are forgotten new hopes may take the place of those destroyed. But to forgive the Ministry which has inflicted these wounds to self esteem will not be so easy, and indeed few will have the greatness of heart to essay the task.
