The unfounded report that the steamer Ruahine was ashore on the coast was caused through a slight breakdown in the vessel's machinery, which led the captain of the small coasting steamer who first circulated the report to imagine that the ship was aground. Since Wednesday last £750,000 in gold has been sent to the Continent from London. . . Details to hand in London of the loss of the P. and O. Company's steamer Bokhara show that the number of lires lost was 170, including 20 passangers. 5 officers, and 3 sergeants of the Hong Kong garrison. Among those saved are Doctor Lawson and Lieut. Markham. Court Kalnoky has informed the delegations that Austria desired to pre« serve the best relations with Russia, and the Government of the latter country has assured him they intended no aggressive movement against Austria. It is proposed to institute a military riding contest from Vienna to Borne, prizes to be awarded according to the condition in which the horses arrive. The natives have attacked German Post in East Africa, killing the garrison and looting the stations. There is some uneasiness in Paris at the report that the Dahomey expedition has been overwhelmed and massacred by 20,000 natives at Couloupa. The report, however, is not confirmed, sad at present is nothing but a rumour. The failure of several Russian firms is announced. Information from Singapore states five Malays have been sentenced to death for the murder of Harris and Stewart of the Australian exploring P»rtr. Four ' were executed, and the fifth died. Of the others convioted of taking part in the murder seven were banished for fire years, and three sentenced to three years impriionment.
