Pohangina Notes

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.} There has been absolutely nothing of moment to record since that of the separation movement has subsided. Ashurst finds that she is in the advance of the age, and must bide her time. That our town will ultimately be recognised as the business outlet of the Pohangioa Valley is a certainty. Property is advancing in price in the Harbor Board Block, one farm has changed hands at £8 per acre. On dit that Mr Claude Francis is returning to New Zealand, and if so, to what other place could he come than Ashurst ? Many another has gone away — but some irresistible attraction has drawn them back, again. Now that the Wanganui Harbor Enabling Bill has passed both Houses, we shall soon hear the ring of the axe and smell the burnt porridge from the bushfellers' tents. Quite an air of content reigns over the Pouangina Valley— visions of prosperity consequent on spending all this loan money opening up the roads. Three cheers for Lucas and his separation. A sum of £500 was co be put on the estimates by the Minister to make the road through the Government Totara Eeserve on the Pohangina River. It is found that the road will cost £1200— why should the local body be asked to find the balance of the money when Government have the value of the timber in their own hands ? The secretary of the Farm Homestead Association's has been requested to point this out to the Minister of Lands, and has received a reply that the matter will receive attention — so that we may hope to get the whole of the road made by Government money. I notice that one man thinks the totara there worth £1000— another says £3000. Whatever it may be worth, it " will be a booh and blessing to men "—from the money that will be circulated while cutting it.
