♦ (fee press association.) Melbourne, October 18. Portsea has been backed to win the Melbourne Cup for £5000, down to 100 to 5. Conard is quoted at the same price, and Affiance has been supported to win £3,000 at 100 to 3. October 19. Hyena is scratched for the Derby. The Cup betting is exceptionally dull, but Clonard and Fortsea have been heavily backed in Sydney, where St Albans 11., also receives steady support at 100 to 3. The Admiral is likely to come into the betting before long. There is a great outcry in the city against the number of totalisator shops conducting business openly in the principal streets. The number of youths hanging around them all day is positively alarming.
