(PEE PEESB ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, October 14, A settler named Peter Wotten, residing at Parapararau, entered an outhouse last night in search, of some blasting* powder, when a spark from the candle he was carrying ignited the explosive, and he was blown out of the building. He was burned about the head and chest. He was sent to town for medical treatment. It is believed that the mtro«glycerine cartridge found omong the railway coal got there accidentally, and had probably lain in the for months. Cartridges containing nitro glycerine are not used in coal, but are employed in quartz reefing. The cartridge was forwarded to the Government Analyst, who ascer tamed by experiments that only by per* cussion could be fired, and consequently had the cartridge been shoTelled with the coal into the furnace no explosion would have followed. Mr Fisher, M,H,R., a candidate for the Mayoralty, states that previous to announcing himself he asked Messrs Bell and Duthie whether they intended to stand, and only offered himself when positively informed by both that they would not be candidates, and expresses surprise that under the circumstances Mr Duthie is a candidate. The Premier attended a Cabinet meet" ing in the Treasury Buildings to«day. Dcnedin, October 14 At the annual meeting of the D.1.C., Mr Hallensteia (the chairman) stated that the net profit was L 9733, as against L 7300 last year, for which addition the company was mainly indedted to the new branch at Wellington, where the turnoyer had been larger than during the first year at cither Christchurch or Dune, din. A dividend of 1\ per cent and a bonus of 4 por cent on the shareholders' purchases was declared.
