Two sailors named McEwen and McNeill have been arrested en the capital charge both men having passed the niel:t in the woman's company. After his arrest McEwen attempted to commit suicide. October 14. Moonlighters in Athboy, six miles north-west of Trim, County Meath, waylaid Inspector Lilly, and nearly murdered him. A quantity of harness has been destroyed by members ot the Army Service Corps stationed at the Coleworth Barracks, Portsmouth, as a protest against extra drills. The press comments on the fact that the Prince of Wales attended the races at Newmarket instead of being present at Lord Tennyson's funeral. At an inquest on the body of Miss Ruby Russell, the actress, the jury found that she had been poisoned with morphia, and exculpated Dr Heron from blame. Brussels, October 13, Ten thousand Belgian miners belong* ing to Boranill district have struck for higher wages Constantinople. October 14. Ten deaths from cholera have been recorded at Erzeroum, the capital of Turkish ArmeniaCalcutta, October 14. General Brackenbury has announced in Simla that England would maintain the independence of Afghanistan against all aggression. The Chins have renewed the attack on the British forces, but no particulars are to hand. Reinforcements are advancing to Fort White. The civil police are joining the rebel China at Fort White. St. .Peteksbubg, October 14. Several members of a secret society in Lithuania have been arrested, including a Judge of the High Court. Beblin, October 14. Geologists report that the German East African territory is virtually barren. It is proposed to empower the Reichstag to fix the peace footing of the army, and thus secure the passing of the Bill increasing the number of men. Romk, October 13. The King of Italy has fixed the general elections for 6th November. He declares that some years of peace will be necessary to restore the finances to a satisfactory condition. Pahis, October 13 The Rothchilds are floating the Russian loan. Lisbon, October 13. A bear escaped from the Lisbon Zoo, and killed three keepers before it was shot. Capetown, October 13. President Kriiger advocates placing the British residents on an equal footing with the Dutch in Transvaal.
