* (per press association.) Masterton, October 12. Mr John O'Brien, aged 65, teacher at Masterton Catholic scbool, ahd for-' merly of Palmerston North, died very suddenly this morning ot heart desease. Dunedin, October 12. At the inquest on the body of Baxter, a verdict of temporary insanity was recorded. Deceased's family said he feared being pressed for rent, but the representative of the landlord said the rent had never been demanded. Before committing the act, deceased wrote a note, addressed to a Christchurch jeweller, saying he preferred ending his life to accepting charity. Wellington, This Day. The Gorge line is expected to be opened again on Monday. With reference to Mr Seddon's charge that the Railway Commissioners had let a contraot for coal and then lowered the rates, putting £5000 into the pockets of the contractor, the Commissioners state it is quite true that sometime after giving the contract to Kennedy they lowered freights on the West Coast 2d per ton in consequence of the outcry against the competition of Newcastle coal, but, with Kennedy's consent, the amount of the remission was deducted from the payments made to him, and consequently he derived no advantage from it. They also state no fayor has been shown to any newspaper in advertising, aud tho amount paid to each paper iv tho principal centres is withm a few pouuds the same.
