Meeting at Pohangina
• ■ . A meeting of the ratepayers in No. 2 ward of the Pohangina Road District was held at Mr Adsett's mill, Pohangina, yesterday afternoon, when there were about 17 or 18 ratepayers present. The meeting was converted to discuss estimates for road work in the ward, the money for payment of which was to be raised by loan under the " Government Loans to Local Bodies Act." Mr G. R. Lucas, the chairman of the Road Board, was voted to the chair on the motion of Mr Dickin. In explaining the reason for calling the meeting, Mr Lucas said that as a Road Board could not borrow more than three thousand in one year he would advise them to push on the loan proposals as -fast as possible, for if other wards wished to borrow the £3000 allowed by law would have to be divided amongst the applicants. He also thought that road formation should be done in fine weather, as it was less expensive and could be done better. The interest on £5500, at 5 per cent, would be L 275, and it would be a good suggestion to pay the first year's interest out of the loan. Mr Lucas also stated that if the schedule was agreed to before the Board advanced the proposals, both time and bother would be saved. The schedule was read by the chairman as follows, and was agreed to after discussion without any dissentients : 14 chains Ferry road, from Pohangina river to Main road, to be formed 20ft wide and metalled 14ft wide, at L 4 per chain, — L 5 6; 207 chains No. 1 line, from Main road to western boundary of section .4. block XI, at L 4 per chain,— Lß2B.; 164 chains No. 2 line, from Main road to western boundary of section 44, block XIV, at L3,— L492 ; 242 chains No 3 line, from Main road to western boundary section 50, block XIV, at L3,— L726. Nos. 1, 2, and 3 lines to be formed 14 feet wide, metalled 12 feet wide and 6 inches deep. 95 chains No. 4 line, from Main road to western boundary block XIV, at £3, £285, and 621 claims main road, from southern boundary of the block to the northern boundary at £5 per chain, £3105. Total cost of work, £5492. The thirds from sections would go towards paying the interest on the loan as long as they last, but a special rate will have to be struck as a guarantee although it may not be collected. Proposed by Mr Lynch, seconded by Mr Palmer, That the estimates submitted to the meeting held at Mr Adsett's mill on October 5, 1892, be adopted.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Hughey, seconded by Mr Holly, That the warden of No 2 Ward be instructed to bring the loan proposals before the next meeting of the Board to be held on October 8, at Feilding.— Carried. Mr Lucas informed the meeting that the Commissioner of Crown Lands was preparing the papers for signature for the disposal of thirds, and would be circulated as soon as possible. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
