A Modern Prize Fight

The Sydney Referee publishes the following account of the fight between John L. Sulliyan and J. Corbett at New Orleans on September 7th :— The betting was 6t04 on Sullivan. Corbett had all the better of the contest, and proved the more clever ot the two. He wore Sullivan down, although the latter fought with great pluck and determination, and finally knocked him out in twenty-one rounds. Corbett fought with great caution for four rounds, and dodged Sullivan round the ring, trying to tire him out. In the fifth round heavy fighting took place. Corbett landed six times without return on Sullivan's face. In the eleventh round Sullivan landed two heavy blows, and Corbett, aroused, drove Sullivan round the ring. Sullivan fought viciously, but with slow blows, short and erratic. In the seventeenth round Sullivan knocked Corbett down with a low body blow. Heavy fighting followed, and the round finished in favor of Sullivan. Both^were cautious in the next round. Corbett was very cool, and repeatedly landed heavy blows on Sullivan, who was nearly out at the end of the twentieth round. Directly the twenty-first round commenced, Corbett landed his. opponent heavily on the jaw. Sullivan fell, but rose after six seconds. Corbett then immediately delivered a tremendous punch on the side of Sullivan's head, knocking him ont. Sullivan tried to rise, but was too weak. The fight lasted '78 minutes. Sullivan weighed 2161 b, and Corbett 1881 b. The stakes were £9000. Sullivan thinks that Peter Jackson can beat Corbett. The Olympic Club at New Orleans cleared 70,000 dollars over the fight. Three hundred thousand dollars were lost over Sullivan in New Orleans alone.
