Nelson Bros.' Frozen meat Report
There has been an abundant supply of meat of all kinds since our last report, and arrivals are likely to be pretty hen try for some time to coidh ; we do nor expect therefore that there will be any increase in prices for the present. Dutch sheep are comina: to Land freely, and, judging from reports j received, Continental sheep may be expected to be imported earlier this year and in large quantities. Mew Zealand mutton — As we mentioned in our last report there was a tendency for prises to go lower and we have now to say that New Zealand frozen mutton has fallen by £d to f d per lb, and it is only in isolated cases and fur very fine sheep that 2s 8d to 2s 9d can be obtained. Stocks are large and in many hands, and as already stated in the previous report a considerable number ot carcases are not in first rate condition. New Zealand lamb— Good qualities are very scarce, and supplies are ample rill the end of the season now close at hand. Australian mutton— A lar«e importation Las brought about a fall in prices which are now quoted at per lb less than they were four weeks a«<o. We regret that a certain number ot the carcases are not quite equal in quality to those imported last year. Frozen Beef— There is a very slight improvement to be noticed in the price oi frozen beef, and stocks being . less, the price should be a little better in the immediate future. American beef is still plentiful and has arrived in steadier quantities during the past month. We tnink it ngnt to repeat the official returns of carcases of mutton and lamb imported during the six months ending June : 898,870 carcases from New Zealand in 1892 against 1,087,776 in 1891 ; 140,363 carcases from Australia in 1892 against 139,748 in 1891; 548,504 carcases from River Plate in 1892 against 494,344 in 1891, and that the official returns give the weight of the above as — 493,836 cwts from Australasia in 1892 against 558,361 cwts in 1891; 220,773 cwts from River Plate in 1892 against 192,245 cwts in 1891.
