'■ • ♦ Auckland, September 8. Arrived— Mariposa, mail steamer, from San Franoisco at 3 p.m. The Mariposa was medically inspected by the health officer, and the mails fumigated. It is reported that daring his stay in London, Andrew Carnegie, owner of the ironworks at Homestead, P., where the recent strike occurred, applied for and received special police protection. Keir Hardie, Labour member in the new House of Commons for the South Division of West Ham, has sent to tbe Homestead (Pennsylvania) strikers, £100 the amount contributed toward his election ezpeosee bv Andrew Carnegie. The large steamer Thraoian, which was beinu towed to Liverpool, was lost off the Isle of Man on August 15th. The crew, 22 in number, went down with the steamer. Tbe captain' 3 wife also perished, Tbe Thracian was in ballast and a heavy gale was blowing. Tbe vessel pitched and rolled to such an extent that the tugs were compelled to heave to. The gale continued to in» crease in violence, and it is supposed the Thracian capsized, for when the day broke no trace could be seen of her.
