Scene in the House

During the progress of the discussion of the Land BiJl in the House yesterday morning, the Hon. Mr Seddon was referring to the whole question, and, when attending to one of his statements, Mr Fergus was seen to turn to Mr Harkness, and was understood to ejaculate " Hear how he lies." Mr Seddon retorted that if any member had used such words outside the House, he would take such steps as to prevent him eyer using them again. Sir George Grey moved that these words be taken down. Ultimately the words were reported to the Speaker, but Mr Seddon maintained it was not necessary for him to say anything in extenuation of his language, *nd retired from the Chamber. Mr Fergus denied having used the words attributed to him, but Mr Fisher said Mr Fergus had undoubtedly used the phrase. Capt. Russell thought it was beyond all decency for any member, especially the Leader of the House, to threaten personal violence. Ultimately a motion was carried, That Mr Seddon 's explanation was satisfactory. Mr Seddon was then readmitted to the House. He said the House, in passing the resolution, had reflected credit on the Parliament of New Zealand. As a politician and private individual, he had always been careful of his honor, and he contended that under gross provocation he had exhibited great forbearance. Mr Fergus said he was exceedingly sorry for the remark he had made use of, and he offered a most humble apology for having hurt the feelings of any member of the House. This ended the incident, and the House resumed in committee on the Land Bill.
