A Strange Robbery

An extraordinary case of robbery has been reported to the Sydney police as having occurred at a small shop at Surrey Hills. Over the shop is a dwelling-house occupied by a man named Alfred George Clark, his wife and family, and/bis father-in-law, MrSainty. Last Wednesday night, according to the statement made go the police, Mr and Mrs Clark retired ; to bed at .the usual hour, locking the bedroom door inside. Nextmorninsr, when Mrs Clark awoke^ she foiind her husband in an insensible condition. His hands were tightly bound before him as he lay on his back in the bed. and a piece of cord, which was subsequently found to have been cut away fro'in one of the Venetian blinds, was bound round his throat, one end being attached to the arm of the bed. After vigorous treatment she sue cceded in restoring him to his senses, but he could hot explain how he got info the position in which ' his wife found him. An examination was then made of the room, arid it was found that it bad been ransacked, and the jewellery and money to the value of LCO had been stolen. It was also discovered that the door of the room was locked from the outside, though Mrs Clark had early in. the night locked it from the inside". The theory oi the police is thr>t the thieves g'arly in the evening secreted themselves in the bedroom, chloroformed iher occupants, gagged and bound Clark, and then robbed the house, 1 The children, who were sleeping in the next room, say that they he>rd strange voices in their father's bedroom during the night, but were too frightened to call out.
