The San Francisco Mail Service

The English postal authorities have cabled their reply to the proposals of the New Zealam! Government for the renewal of the San Francisco Mail Service. It is to the effect that the English Go rernment will renew the subsidy, but only on strictly Postal Union terms. The meaning of this despatch is thai the office despatchiag mails considers itself responsible for the conveyance of its mails from the time they are shipped until they arrive at the p»rt of debarka* tion, which arrangement has practically been in force since last year. Under the new proposal the English Government would onlj contribute 3s 8d per 1b for letters, and 3d per lb for book and news matter, instead of 12s per lb for letters. and nothing for book and news matter, as formerly. This means that taking last year's figures as a basis the change would result in a loss of £2000 a year,— N.Z. Times.
