The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 1892. Gable Bates

The Postmaster-General, Mr Ward, has beeu successful in negotiating on behalf of this colony, with the Eastern Extension Cable Company, and the other Australian Governments, for a reduction of cable rates with the results that New Zealand will in a very short time be in the possession of a cable service which has a cheaper tariff than can be found in any other part of the world. The entire credit of the successful issue of these negotiations is due to Mr Ward, who has once more proved himself to be the right man in the right place ; and brought to bear on this matter a sound, business-like spirit that must considerably enhance his reputation as an administrator. The kudos, which deservedly belongs to him, will to some extent compensate him for the abandonment of his penny postage scheme, which we know was dear to his heart, and which we do not des pair of him being able to bring in if he only hold his present portfolio when the Colony's finances are in a sounder condition. It is understood that the Chambers of Commerce guarantee £5000 so that the general taxpayer is not burdened in the slfghtest degree by the concessions. Mr Ward is sanguine that an early expansion of cable business will take place, and that in a short time the necessity for the guarantee will disappear. Every journal in the colony will feel grateful to Mr Ward, who has also earned the best thanks of the commercial community for the relief he has afforded them in this respect.
