Wellington Markets
The Wellington branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report as follows on the produce markets for the week ending Wednesday. 10th August, 1892 :— Wool — Judging from recent cables, the manufacturing trade in the Old Country is still under a cloud, our late advices indicating considerable uneasiness, following upon failure of one of the largest Bradford firms. It is impossible to estimate the disastrous results to the mercantile community in England of the numerous and continued strikes, with consequent closing of immense industries, perhaps the most fatal of which has been the coal strike, nor the extent and various ramifications of the disaster. To-day's cables, as regards British imports and exports, give an indication of results, the exports having decreased to the extent of £2,482,---000. Frozen Meat — London office cables on sth instant as follows : — The mutton market is quiet. Canterbury is worth 3£d, and Wellington 3§d per lb. The lamb market is firm, Canterbury being worth sgd per lb. New Zealand beef, hindquarters, is worth 3}d per lb ; and forequarters, 2% d per lb. Grain — There is a moderate demand for good whole sprouted wheat at 2s 7d to 2s 8d per bushel. Oats continue firm, the supplies being received into southern ports are limited. Sydney cables report prices firm there. We quote good short feed 2s to 2s Id ; seed varieties. 2s 4d to 2s 5d per bushel. A fair demand exists for maize at 2s 5d to 2s 6d per bushel. Barley is neglected, prices nominal. Grass Seeds— The weather up to now has been very unfavourable for outdoor work in the country, in consequence there has not been much doing in the seed line. Byegrass is in good demand. For best southern machine-dressed we quote 4s 3d to 4s 9d ; Poverty Bay, 6s to 6s 9d ; and Pacey's perennial (imported) 4s lOd per bushel. Bright clean cocksfoot is worth 4£d to 4^d per lb; slightly discoloured, 2^d to 3d per lb.
