Among the awards for gallantry in saving 1 life this year the followingcome to New Zealand : — Silver medal : James White, of Opotiki, storekeeper, rescued Kobert Kawson, of Opotiki, ayed eighteen years, trom drowuig at Opotiki Bar, on the 15th August, 1891. Five fisherman were capsized in the breakers outside the bar. White, m a dingey, went to the rescue. When about fifty yard* from the upturned boat one of his oars broke With one oar he reached the capsized boat, but of the five Robert Kawson alone remained, and he was insane. After getting him into his dingey he sculled back with him in safety. One of the others was savod by two JNatives, but the other three were drowned. The Natives resuscitated one man by holding him over a smokey fire, which is their mode of resuscitating the drowned. Hronze medals : William Nightingale, John Bales, and John F. Connelly. Certificates of merit: Thomas Bolton, George Grey Smith, Willian J. Murdock, John Dwyer. W. Moiony, Henry Huckstep. Michael Brady, Edward Mackay, Percy T. Prichard, Bessie Howard, Andrew Milier, and William Urey. The deeds for which the bronze medas weie given are not detailed in the ' Argus,' from which the foregoing is taken. — Dunedin Star.
