It is feared that ninety persons hare been drowned owing to a collision between passenger steamers at Helsingfors, Finland. The French have opened war against the King of Dahomey, and are now engaged in bombarding the towns. Information from the West Coast of Africa states that the French troops hare burned Kotonon, and that in an engage* ment with the Dahonieyans the latter lost heavily. The attacking fleet assisting in the British naval manoeuvre? evaded the vigilance of the defending fleet, and cap« tured Kingstown, the port of Dublin. The average daily death rate in Russia from cholera has been 8000. Information has been received that tbe tribes in the vicinity of Nyan^we, Upper Congo, have revolted. A flour trust is being formed in San Francisco, with a capital 3,000.000d015. The Times' St Petersburg correspondent wires that the Rnssians are asserting their rights to occupy Sighnan in the Pamirs, and are also ejecting the Chinese from K-ishgar. The Russian expedition is said to be moving southward, in the direction of Afghanistan. Captain Youughusband, who was iv command of a recent British expedition in the Pamia Plateau, has been sent to Gilgit to watch the progress of events. The Ameer of Afghanistan is powerless to punish tlie revolting tribes. The German Government are .seeking a reduction of the .Russian duties on steel and iron, and propose a reduction in the duties on Russian corn admitted into Germany. The Berlin, discussing the matter, warns the Government that Russia generally repays any concessions with injury. A severe earthquake has been felt at Ems (a watering placeof Hessen Nassau), Coblentz (a town of Rhenish Prussia), Nassau (a part of the province of H.e»ien Nassau), and other towns of mrnor ima portmce in Germany. Several buildings were damaged but up to the present no loss of life is reported. The rebels in Morocco, forcing the attack, repulsed the Sultan's troops, who fled towards the city, and are being hotly pursued. The battle lasted for five hours and there were heavy losses on both sides. The country is being devastated by fire and sword. Mr Gladstone mace a splendid speech upon the amendment to the Address in Reply, occupying an hour. He declared that if the Government remained in office it was contrary to Disraeli's manly pre* cedent of 1868, and that followed by himself in 1886. Mr Gladstone is much gratified at tha receipt of cables from Australia congra* lulating him on his victory and approving of his Home Rule proposals It is reported that the Parnellite Party resent the vagueness of Mr Gladstone.
