The police haye returned from the Hokonui district, it is believed, without discovering anything conclusive regarding the murder of Richard Bell, or the owner of the gun found at the fatal srot. It is said that the settlers in the district haye shown no desire to assist the police in their enquiries. John Mcßac, the man Accused of the murder, will be brought up to morrow at the Police Jourt, but will probably be remsnded without evidence. AUCKLAND, August 5. Archibald Grandson, builder, whose name was brought up in the Whyte land scrip affairs, has returned from Scotland. He states that he was not spirited out of the country, and will bo glad to give such evidence as he can npon the subject of his land transactions with the Government if the authorities so desire. Wellington. This Day. A large party of members and their wiye? and others, went over to the forts this morning. Upon being- joined by the Governor the batteries will be inspected and bi£ guns will be fired. Several submarine explosions will follow. The Countess will blow up a whuleboat rigged ac a barquentine and moored oyer a line of four mines. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Welfred Lawsori who posed here a short time ago, as a son of the wellknown Sir Wilfred Lawson and delivered a temperance lecture, on a charge of false pretences. He is accusod of giving a cheque for £7 which proved to be valueless.
