There will be mass in St. Bridget's next Sunday morning at eleven o'clock. Mr C. H. 11. Stuart-Forbes is requested to send his address to his father Sir WiJliara Forbes, at Picton. We have to thank the Government printer for a couple of batches of Parliamentary papers, and Hansard to date. Queensland footballers have again defeated New South Wales, this time by 19 points to 9. The first batch of entries for Messrs Freeman E. Jackson and Co.'s sale at Feilding, on the 12th instaut, appears to-day. The Feilding Borough Council will meet next Thursday evening, and the Manchester Eoad Board on Saturday afternoon. We regret to learn that Mr E. H, Crease, of Wellington, the well-known coffee merchant, died yesterday, after a long illness, A typographical error crept into Mr S. Goodbehore's letter published in our last issue. In speaking of the doctrine of Protection the word " precious " was misprinted for the word " pernicious." It has been arranged that from Ist August the postage on newspapers to Australia and the United Kingdom will be Id each as formerly To any other country id per 2 ounces. The funeral of the late son of Mr Jacobs ot the Feilding-Ashurst Koad, will take place to morrow. Mr Shearer, undertaker, intimates that the procession will leave Mr Jacob's residence at 12.30 p.m, for the Feilding cemetery. An interesting advertisement from the now famous Empire Tea Company ap* pears to-day. Our advice to all lovers of '■ the cup that cheers but not inebriates" is to read it. The brands of this company are now so well known that they are " familiar as household words " everywhere. It is intended to formally open the Birmingham Wesleyan Church on the 4th Septemier, when all three services will be taken by visiting ministers. On the Wednesday following, a soiree will be held to commemorate the event. Ladies will now have a special chance of buying some wonderfully cheap line* in winter dress goods millinery, jackets, and ulsters at Mr J. B. Hamilton's. The reductions ailowed on the above named goods are something unusually liberal foi Feilding, to which the general public are requested by advertisement to come and see for themselves. We have been requested to draw special attention to the change in tin date of the gift auction sale to be held here, in aid of the Palroerslon North District Hospital. We regret to hear Mr Towler's son Walter, met with an accident last Saturday morning. As he was coming home to dinner, he had occasion to walk across a log when his foot slipped, and he fell on the side of his head causing a slight concussion of the brain. However he is going on as well as can be expected, and no serious consequences are anticipated. A terrible accidfnt, resulting in the death of four men and the serious injury of five others, occurred at Messrs Car* negie's steel works at Homestead, Pitts burg. In the converting department a vessel filled with molten steel was capsized, aud its liquid contents were poured into the pit below. Nine men were bathed in the molten stream, all of whom sustained frightful injuries. Four have since died. Mr C. H. Ormond, special representative for the Colonial Mutual, is now in Feilding, offering a new and very advantageous form of Life Assurance, viz. : the addition of the premiums paid during a period ol twenty years to the amount of the policy, In addition to the above the profits accumulate and are payable in cash at the expiring of the terra. Mr Orrnond's stay here is limited, owing to having made arrangements to be at Marton this week. Mr Carthew is the local agent of the Society. Mr William Maxwell, a settler at Bunnythorpe, met with a serious accident whilst working on his section last Wednesday in the Harbor Board Block. He was engaged cutting a log which was overhanging a sheep track, when the upper portion slipped down and struck Mr Maxwell a severe blow on the body, breaking several of his ribs, besides injuring him internally. Several neighbors hastened to his assistance and helped him to a trap, in which he was conveyed to his home at Bunnythorpe, when he was attended to by a Palmerston doctor. The debate on the Financial Statement will be continued by Mr Buckl&nd to-day, and it is probable that it will conclude on Wednesday night. The Government will then carry through their most important Bills as expeditiously as circumstances will permit. The Electoral Bill has not jet completed its progress through committee, besides which there are the Land Bill and the Land for Settlements Bill, and a host of minor measures. In regard to the Civil Service Bill we understand it is not to be dropped, as has been stated, but will be dealt with as soon as possible. — Times, Mr Charles Kobinson, late of H. M. 65th Kegiment of Foot, who arrived in Wanganui on May 24th, 1847, entered on the 73rd year o( his age yesterday and notwithstanding the many vicissitudes through which he has passed he is still hale and hearty, and as smart a man for his age as one would see in a day's walk. A talk with " Charley " on his many reminiscences of the early days of Wanganui and the troublous times with the Maoris, is surrounded with considerables interest, and his memory is unfailiug as regards some of the most stirring times through which the colony passed in its youthful days. — Wanganut Herald. Mr Alfred Eade, of the Corner Furniture Warehouse, has just completed, on behalf of Mr Peter Bartholomew, a very unique piece of furniture, being a combined cheffonier and book-case, made out of some rare mottled totara, found a few years ago on Mr Bartholomew's property at • Kiwitea. This elegant specimen of cabinetwork is very nicely fitted with brass and amber mountings, and reflects great credit on Mr Eade's workmanship. Mr Bartholomew has likewise in his possession two bedsteads and a wardrobe made of timber from the same tree. The book-cisc is on exhibition in Mr Eade's window, and is certainly worthy of inspection owing to the (3xcellcnco of tho work and the beauty of the timber used iv its construction.

Yesterday afternoon a horse attached to a trap took fright in Fergnsson street and bolted up Manchester street, and in turning the corner opposite Mr Carthew's shop upset, the horse coming down al6O. Fortunately no one in the conveyance was injured, neither was the horse or any part of the trap or harness, beyond the splash board being slightly bent. Mr Bruce was twitted by a con» stituent that he, a pronounced Individualist, should follow a Land Nationalist like the Leader of the Opposition. Mr Bruce said he thought that if Mr Kolleston went into the lobby to secure land nationalisation, the bulk of the Party would be found in the other, " And I told him," added Mr Bruce, "that Parties arc like snakes--they nre moved not by their heads, but by their tails " A meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Educational Institute was held in the Central School, Palmerston, on ■ Saturday afternoon. There were 23 teachers present, and it was resolved to ! form a branch at Palmerston. It was > decided to hold meetings of the branch in consecutive months in Palraerston, Feildinfc, and Marton on the second 1 Saturday in earh month and that the 1 next meeting should be held on the ' second Saturday in August in Ffilding. 1 The following officers were elected: — 1 President, Mr F. E. Watson (Palmerston) Vice- Presidents, Mr Hill (Feilding) ; and Mr Mossman (Marton) ; Secretary i and Treasurer, Mr Foster (Palmerdton).
