The Member for Rangitikei

♦- The following from an Opposition paper like the Lyttelton Times shows how Mr Jiobert Bruce is appreciated by his fellow members in the House : — The new member for Rangitikei is one whom the citizens of Chris' church will remember as the victim of a somewhat discourteous display when he sought to instruct them on the subject of Freetrade. He is the last man thai should be so treated, as he is himself a pattern of genereous politeness to friend or foe, to prince or peasant, and as such was very heartily welcomed back to the Hoase by both parties. He is richly gifted by Nature with many attractive qualities. His voice especially is pleasant, clear, manly and sonorous His appearance is that of a jolly sailor, quite at home with himself and with the rest of the world, indifferent to luxury, ready to face any hardship or any danger, and equally sure of a good reception in the cabin or the forecastle. He is a very pleasant speaker, without being powerful ; his English is very pure, his words nicely chosen, and he only speaks when he has something to say which is worth hearing. He is simple in his aims, he does not pose as a coming Minister, and evidently relies more on his naturally good perception than upon any laborious research. He loves his party, and will stick to them in spite of their faults, but he does not love them faults and ell. He was sorely tried in this respect when the former leaders in the House dropped their Freetrade profession and adopted a police of Protection.
