. » . . .. -. . ■ . - A pamphlet entitled "A Review of the Progress of the Saivatioq Army during the year 1891," compiled by the Chief of the Staff in London, with the statements of accounts certified to j by Messrs Knox, Burbridge, Cropper, . and Co., chartered accountants, ot Finsbury Circus, gives a brief glance I at the work of the Army all over the world. They haye now 3154 corps with 10,893 officers. They publish 32 | weekly newspapers and four monthly magazines, having a total annual circulation of forty-five millions. There are 87 training garrisons, 21 cavalry forts.. and ' 22 homes of rest spread over 37 countries and colonies. Their literature is published in 17 languages, and they deliver their doctrine in no fewer than 34 languages. ; , ' jtn their social work, they have 40 rescue homes, 53 slum posts, 15 prison gate brigades, 28 food depots .and shelters for the destitute, 1 inebriates home, 18 faotories and 1 workshops, 3 labour bureaus, or a total number of. institutions 156. The officers and others managing vhese branches number 722. Their general income and expenditure account for 1891 is £35,234 10s 9d with a credit balance of £580 I2s sd', and £169 0s 7d carried to the Salvation Army fund, or a tonal balance of :&&■ I3s. < The self denial fund realised £30,281 17s 2d, of which £29,465 9a Od was expended in special grants to various countries, .less lis 6d^ expenses. Of the New Zealand branch of the ; Army the payments' made by the London headquarters on account rot New Zealand, passage money ' and incidentals, amounted to £130 9s 9d, •while the donations received in London from this colon jr for the colonial, and foreign service fund was exactly J 2os..
