Shocking Murder of a Farmer

Richard Bell, farmer, returning from a meeting of the Hokonui Farmer's Club , on Monday night, at 10.30 o'clock, and' when in the act of stooping from his horse to open the gate he was deliberately shot ! in the face by some person waiting near ! by. His cheek was fearfully shattered, ( and the jaw was carried away. He managed to reach home, and lived three hours, but was unable to tell who was the murderer. A double-barrelled gun was found at the scene of the murder, the left barrel being discharged. De ceased was a quiet inoffensive man, and , leaves a young wife and several children. When asked by bis wife of anybody he though would committ the act, he made a sign in the negative.
