Wreck of the Edith May at Wanganui
. — - — ♦— • During a heavj gale on Saturday night, the barquentine Edith May, which was anchored in the Wauganui roadstead, drove ashore. She struck the boach about throe and a half miles to the north of the pilot station, at 5.30 a.m. on Sunday, and became a total wreck. About five hours later, whilst an attempt was Being made to lauch a boat, a heavy sea •truck the vessel, washing it and 'the mate, Alfred Reynolds, overboard. After several attempts, a hue attached to a plank was washed ashore, and the captain and five remaining men were hauled ashore, all being safely land by 2.30 p.m. The insurances are as follows :— £1600 .on the vessel in the New* Zealand losurance Company (Sydney branch). The hull was surveyed when she was last in Wanganui, and the value placed upon it theu was £1750. Her cargo was valued at £2500; Messrs A. Hatrick and Co. 's flour was insured for £600 in the Standard and £500 in the Globe ; the remainder of the cargo was insured for £1100, and the freight for £200. This Day. The schooner Edith May is breaking up. She was abandoned by Captain Joss yesterday.
