Disastrous Earthquake
LATEST PARTICULARS. [PER PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, July 25. Further particulars of the disastrous eruption show that at 6 o'clock on June 7th, the volcano or Ganongaroo, on the Island of Sanguier, broke out without any warning, and for three hours belched forth flames, smoke, ashes, and stones. This was followed by a heavy rain of dust and ashes, which continued all night, but there was no earthquakes during the night. There were heavy rumblings in the mountains and slight eruptions of mud and ashes, followed again by a terrific rain of debris. The village of Toroena was covered by ashes, and many houses crushed in by the weight. Plantations were entirely destroyed and vegetation burned up. The north side ol the island is almost demolished and whole villages are burned. It is believed the loss of life will be terrific, and many bodies have already been recovered, There was a tidal wave but the shipping is safe. Relief yessels have already reached the island.
