It is very much to be regretted that obstacles should be placed in the way of pushing on the erection of the Palmerston North District Hospital. It would appear from the reports of the Board meetings and the conference which was held between the Board members and the Palmerston North Borough Councillors, that a good deal of personal animus has been imported into the various discussions which have taken place, and one cantankerous member has been particularly officious in raising legal quibbles. Our contemporary the Manawatu Ti.nes in dealing with the subject truly says that while men are splitting straws over the reserves question, tbe work is at a standstill, but any moment accidents may occur and lives be sacrificed because no hospital accommodation is provided nearer than Wanganui or Wellington- We may state that considerable harm has been done here in regard to the gift auction to be held on the sth of August to raise funds for the benefit of the Hospital, because people will not subscribe to an institution when they have just cause to fear that the money will be frittered away in law expenses to gratify the spleen of one man.
