The Magill (N.S.W) Tragedy
Shortly after midnight on the 21st ult. a terrible tragedy occurred at Magill, New South Wales. A man, -familiarly known as "Scotty'^ Edwards. Was shot dead, and at 4.55 a.m., a volunteer named Joseph James Carter was brought to the city in uniform under suspicion of having killed Edwards. The particulars of the -tragedy are as follow : — The prisoner Carter and the deceased Edwards were on the Monday night drinking* together in one of the hotels, when they quarrelled. Deceased afterwards took Carter, who was said, to be very 'drunk, to his home, and left him there Edwards then went to his own home, which was not far distant, and retired to rest with his wile, Shortly afterwards, at about 10 minutes past midnight, Carter is said to have come to deceabed's abode and knocking at the door, calling; upon Edwards to come out to him. The deceased accord- ' ingly got out of bed and opened the door. He was than facing Carier, who had his rifle with him, having, it is believed, gone home tor it, as he was not carrying it earlier in the evening. Before Edwards had time to protect himself, Carter, it is alleged, levelled the rifle at him and fired, the bullet going clean through Edwards. Carter then returned to his home, covered himself up in bed without taking off his uniform, and went to sleep. He was still reposing when Detective Lawton with two mounted constables visited the house and made the arrest. He has been committed for trial.
