Tithe Rioting
The disconteut about the payment of tithes which had been simmering in Coventry, England, for some time, culminated in v riot on AJay '26, in which thousand took part. The bailiffs had seized a lot of goods aud chattels of the malcontents which were being auctioned in the market place by a Birmingham man, as no local auctioneer would venture on the job. thestranger had hardly commenced the sale when he was saluted with rotton eggs, cabbage §talks, and other inisailes. He sought safety in flight, pursueo by the infuriated mob, who certainly would have done him great bodily harm had not a good-hearted innkeeper opened his doors and gi»en him reiuge. The people then took their goods, went home, and the sale was postponed indefinitely. There were some runny episodes in the trouble. A lot ot bailiffs sent to seize a farmer's ho^s, found them all greased, and after trying half a day to effect their capture, gave up the task in despair.
