Feilding Borough Council

The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday fS. Present-Mr W. O. Haybittle (Mayor) and Councillors Gould, S. J. Thompson, Sandilands, E. Goodbehere, C»rtbew,and Watts. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from Dr Sorley reporting a case of diphtheria at in Makino and slating that all precautions had been taken. Letters from the Marton Borongh Council, the Rangitikei County Council, and the Manchester Koad Board, stating that they would unite with the Feilding Borongh Council in requisitioning the Government for a second through tram from Wellington to Wanganui daily. Letter from the Secretary to the New Zealand Government Railways acknowledging the receipt of Council's letter re extra train daily. Letter from the Manawatu Railway Company, stating that it would be impossible to arrange their service to enable a train to run through from Wellington, as the matter rests with the Government line to delay their last daily train from Palmerston. Letter from Railway Commissioners, stating that they would grant passes to the Council's Delegate to the Municipal Association's Conference as usual. Letter from the Secretary to above Conference enclosing pass over the Government line. Letter from the Town Clerk of Palmerston enclosing a copy of motions to be proposed at the Municipal Conference. Extract from report of enquiry held by H. W. Brabant Esq. R.M., re the control and maintenance of Awahuri bridge. " In my opinion the costs of the Feilding Borough should be paid by the Manawatu Road Board, the latter body having made its claim against the former and failed to establish it, with this exception, I think that each body should pay its own costs." Letter from the Colonial Secretary authorizing the removal of the remains of the body of the late John Manson from the Feilding Cemetery. Letter from Audit Office returning balance sheet ot the Borough, duly audited for the year ending 31st March 1892. Letter from Audit Inspector stating that the time occupied in auditing the Borough accounts for the past half-year had been 15 hours, and requesting payment of the fee of £5. Letter from Mr Andrew acting as Secretary of -Public Meeting held at Wanganui last Friday, requesting thej Council's support towards the foundation ot a Museum for the West Coast. Mr Drew's Museum in Wanganui, lately valued at £1200 by Sir James Hector, has been offered for £600 to the Wanganui Council to which will have to be added the cost of a building. Upwards of i'4Bo was subscribed at the meeting, and canvassers were appointed to solicit subscriptions, and another meeting will be held on the 24th to receive their reports. The committee of the above meeting requested the co-operation and support of the Feilding Council, and suggested the advisability of the Mayor of Feilding attending their meeting on the 24th instant. GENERAL. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the application of the Bank of New Zealand for making and kerbing footpath, and also for making box drain and erecting hitching posts be granted, and that the application of Mr Sheehy for making and kerbing the footpath be also granted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Carthew, That the account for auditing the Borough accounts be paid. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the respective applications of Miss Goodbehere and Messrs Woolven and Nesbitt for change of names on Burgess list be granted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Watts, That the bill of costs rendered by the Borough solicitor in connection with the enquiries held by the Commissioner into the matter of the maintenance and control of the Aorangi and Awahuri bridges, and also the allowance made by the Commissioner to Mr Bray for attendance on the Council's behalf be paid. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Watts, That the Public Works Committee inspect an open drain in Queen street with the object of taking measures to do away with the stagnant waters' said to exist there. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Gould; That the annual' balance sheet of the Borough be adopted, and that fifty copies be printed. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr Watts, That the Town Clerk be requested to write to Messrs Dwan Bros., and ascertain the conditions on which Jhey are prepared to erect gasworks for Feildißg.— -Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the Council take such steps as shall appear to be necessary for the purpose of having tnat piece of land generally known as " The Oval " or 11 Sports Ground " vested in Trustees, for the use and benefit of 'the ratepayers of the Borough, such Trustees to be nominated by the Council, and the trusts and conditions upon which such Trustees shall hold the said piece of land if so vested to be determined by a committee of the Council.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr. Goodbehere, That his Worship the Mayor and Crs. Goodbehere, Gould, and Sandilands, form a deputation to wait upon the acting Agent of the Colonists Land and Loan Corporation Limited, or *i Directors, thereof, in support of the iin of the ratepayers of the Borough to the Sports Reserve.-r-Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the resolution of June 2nd for the erection of fences, tombstones and vaults, be hereby rescinded. — Carried. Cr. Gould dissenting. The Counil passed accounts amounting to £104 12s 9d for payment, and adjourned till next meeting.
