THE FREETRADE QUESTION.

TO THE KDITOR OF Till. STAH. Sir,—l beg leayo to tender through ; your columns, ray best thanks to Mr i Chamberlain for his kind expressions to- ! i ward me personally contained in his lot- 1 tor published in your Thursday's issue, at j the samo timo I must express my regret that he considers my accusation against him of ignorance of the principles of freetrade and Protection as, iilmsivo and to assure him that it was far from my mteutiou to give offence in that wa^. Moreover, my charging him with ignorance might not be considered more abusive, it as much so as his charging me with stupidity. Now, if I had charged him with stupid ignorauce ho would have had a better ground of complaint against me. With respect to his letter generally, it appears to me to be pretty much a repetition of his former one, and contains nothing to alter my opinion as to his want of knowledge of the subject, and I therefore cannot consent to acquiesce in his wish that I should vote for Mr Stevens. As Mr Chamberlain does not appear to pay much respect to my opinion of the little book I roco in mends J for his perusal, the following opinion of the late Mr John Bright upon it may perhaps have greater weight with him. Iv reply to a letter from an elector of Preston, in Lancashire, Mr Bright says:—"lf you wish to sea this question of Freetrade well discussed I advise you to pay sixpence for the little book written by Mr Mongredien. 1 may recommend it to Mr Harmen as a book out of which he may begin to learn something of correct facts and sound arguments on the question of Freetrade." lain, etc., Saml. Goodbeiieue.
