The usual monthly meeting of the above was held on Thursday Present — Messrs Lethbridgc (in the chair), Nje. Park, Grnnt. Taylor- and Haybittle. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting, and also of the sj/ecwl meeting to accept new tenders for the erection of haspital, were confirmed. Correspoudence was rend from A. ,B Squire, Wellington, applying for the position of matron to the new hospital, and forwarding copies of testimonials. — .Received, and letter ordered to lie on the table for future consideration. Also, from Wanganui Hospital Board, stating that after settlina claims as fur the Board's funds would allow there still remained a liability over the old district of £316 2s SJ. mndc up oftlol 5s 8d to local bodies in the Manawatu district and £164 16s 9d to local bodies in the Wanganui district, nnd asking the Board to take over the linbilit} 7 existing in its district. The Wiingiiniii Board considered that this method would be pre» fera;le to striking a rate over the old district. The Chairman said that the Wanganui Board had taken the advice of their solicitors, and tound they could strike a rate over the whole of the old district it they chose. He was of opinion that a rate of 2s 6d per £1000 should be struck to cover the liaoility. He did not think there was any necessity to strike a rate at the present meeting, as the money in the bank could be used for the purpose. He suggested (hat (he clerk be instructed to write to the various local bodies and ascertain their valuations. They would then have a basis on which to strike the ra*e required to cover the liability.— The suggestion was adopted. Mr Taylor pointed out that, as there were certain moneys in the hands of various local bodies, it was probable that the amount would bo deducted from the gross amount owing. In his opinion the Wanganui Board had no power to strike a rato over the whole of the old district On the motion of Mr Haybittle, it was decided that before accepting part of the liability of the Wanganui Board, the Secretary be instructed to write to the Board and ask them to forward a bal* ance-sheet of the transactions during the year. Mr J, Milverton waited on the Board with reference to the action taken by them to compel him to contribute to the support of his sister. He stated that she was not a destituto person. If his sister had asked him to support her in a proper way without appealing to the Board he would have helped her.
