THE FREETRADE QUESTION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir — Mr T. E. Chamberlain's not very polite remarks on my letter (as, in fact, does his whole letter) exhibit such profound ignorance of the subject upon wbich he writes that I will not venture upon the hopeless task of endeavouring to convince bim of his errors. I will merely inform him (what is the opinion of much wiser men than he or I) that if our manufacturers cannot successfully compete with imported goods without taxing the people for the purpose of enabling them to live, they must go to the wall and devote their capital, energies, and skill to the development of the vast mineral and other natural resources of the country. If Mr Chamberlain desires to be enlightened on the subject of Freetrade and Protection I should recommend him to obtain, and study, Mr Mongredien's little sixpenny book (from which I quoted) which is published by Messrs Cassell, Petter, Galpin, and Co.J London. I am, «fee, Sami,. Goodbehere.
