A Remarkable Death
BUfThe death by lightning of Patrick h ;^Pdole, which occurred near Winslow on May 18, was brought about in a very remarkable manner. ££The deceased when leaving his '■ - Sister's residence was wearing a steel . watch-chain, and she happened to and asked him to take it off f as it might attract the lightning. He said that it was all right, and went on /his way. He was walking on the £sttide of the road, close i.o a wire fence | j when the lightning struck the fence, fC and then travelled to the man's head, completely burning his hair off. At I the post mortem examination it was ' found that there was a black spot over the heart, and another large | mark on the left ankle. The medical r lestimony is to the effect that the electricity striking the man's head would have gone straight to the • earth though his body, but that v the steel watch -chaiD attracted it | and it struck the heart, and then fe went to the earth through his leg. : The steel watch-chain was completely i[ fused, so that the shock must have ; been a heavy one. 'Ihe lightning ■ wa*s so close that it seemed actually ;■ to be in the street.
