Mr Jones was elected chairman and briefly introduced the candidate. The addregg was about the same as that given in other centres. He touched on the Simpson letter, and while disclaiming any idea of unfair play in politics any more than in private life, said that there was no doubt that Mr Simpson had made a most improper use of this letter. The candidate then touched on the principal questions of the day. In reply to questions Mr Stevens said that he was opposed to any further borrowing for any but special purposes which must be shown to be remunerative. He would be prepared to support a scheme for capitalising the thirds on perpetual lease lands. No more questions being asked Mr Taylor proposed and Mr Mcßeth seconded a vote of thanks and confidence.
