IN COMMON JUSTICE.
1O TUIC EDITOR OV THK STAU. Sir — In an endeavour to perform an act of courtesy to Mr Bruce, and also to furnish its readers with the first report of his. political opiuious, the short hand reporter of The Mercury was sent to Pemberton, and by riding between 30 and 40 miles during a bitter night enabled the speech to appear ou the following day. To detract from the merit of his effort a report has been circulated that he lost his notes and had to transcribe incorrectly from memory what was said.- I have been at the trouble of enquiring into the matter, and I learn that the reporter did lose his note papers on his way up ; but having obtained a note book up the country, which he did not Jose, the speech was printed from his transcription of his short-hand report, and as Mr Bruce has not considered it necessary to make any corrections, I think it both unfair and ungenerous to requite Mr Leys for his gallant exertions by any mischievous inuendo from persons who were not there. I am, &c. F. A. Monckton. Feilding, 16th June, 1892.
