Sir Richard Temple advises the British to establish a protectorate over the South Sea Islands when Kanaka labour is to be recruited by the Queensland Government. The Government has abandoned the Irish Local Government Bill owing to the opposition shown to it in the House. Rash banking is alleged to have taken place, by the Oriental Bank owing to a desire to employ enormous deposits. The tactics of the Blame party are irriting General Harrison's supporters, who desire to force the use of the ballot box. Secret parades of the rival parties have caused some collision. Harrison's party destroyed a number of banners carried by Blame's men. The banners were inscribed with the name of Ireland. On the other hand the Blainites tore to pieces the banner the other party bore, bearing the portrait of Harrison. ' Harrison, Blame, Alger, and McKinley | are the only gentlemen who are likely to I be nominated for the Presidency, but Cleveland continues to enlist support. June 10. At an informal meeting of delegates to tho Republican convention it was stated 511 supporters were for Harrison, but Blame's followers declare the statement is unreliable, and that Blame has a slight majority. Prelimenary voting in the "credential " committee gives Pre ident Harrison a slight majority. v There was a panic at midnight in the Convention Hall by the sudden extinction of the electric light, 12,000 people were present and there was a narrow escape of a stampede. Ottawa, June 9. Mercier and Pacaud, have been committed for trial on charges frauds in connection with the Government stationery contracts.
