According to the Medical Press and Circular, a certain Dr T.issinari, of Konie, has discovered that * tobacco smoking fulfils a most valuable hyeienic function, namely, that it is one of the most powerful oi disinfectants, making it a pro plijlactic against a number of infective diseases. A large number of independ* ent investigations were made by . Dr Tassinari on the influence of tobacco smoke on the germs of cholera, anthrax, and pnpnmonia, His method of research was to line the interior of hollow bills with gelatine coniuininc the germs of the diseases named ; tobacco smoke was then passed through these globes for from len to thirty minutes. The. surprising fact was then established that at the expiration of the time the hncilii of true Asiatic cholera and of pneumonia were completely distroved, whatever the kind of tobacco employed for the purpose. The gelatine was absolutely sterilised bj the tobacco smoke. The anthrax bacillus was more resistant, however, while the bacillus of typhoid was scarcely acted on at all. _____ — — —
