The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, MAY 26, 1892. The Late Mr D. H. Macarthur

By the death of Mr Macarthur there will be created a void in the House oi Representatives, which will not be readily filled. The New Zealand Times of yesterday, in a kindly obituary notice ofthe deceased gentleman, said .— " From the outset of hi 9 - career he proved himself one of tho hardest working members of the i House, particularly devoting his at- : tention to matters affecting local government, about which there was ' no better authority in the House. In that capacity he was most useful to successive Governments, during the passing of their local government measures, and occasionally a thorn iv their side. To the general finance of > the country he also devoted a great deal ot attention, and with such sue- ' cess that he was regarded as tbe coming Treasurer of the Opposition Party, of which he was by virtue of his acknowledged abilities, and in consequence of his steady support of the last Atkinson Government, one of the leaders. No debate ou a want of confidence motion was ever considered complete in Mr Macarthur's time until he had spoken, and no importaut Bill was thought to have been properly discussed in Committee unless he had taken a hand. A staunch friend he always was to his party, and a determined enemy, always as courteous aud fair, as he Was uncompromising. In committee work he was always very strong, beine: reckoned one of the most useful men in the House in that respect." This is as true as it is honorable to the writer. The article concludes thus:— A strenuous, hardworking, public man, the representative of a powerful combination, an example in private life, Mr Macarthur has gone to his account. ' Peace be to his ashes' will be the heartfelt wish of many thousands of people over a large country side. ■■■■■■■■■■■Htß
