The Queen's Birthday

The morning broke bright and fair, and although the temperature was low, there was every prospect of a lovely day. Punctually afc 7 a.m. a team of the Man - cheater Rifles appointed to leave for Marton, under the command of Lieutenant Bray, to fire a friendly match with the Royal Rifles, paraded at the railway station and took their departure by the train. They suffered a defeat, as will be seen by the scores published elsewhere. They j also assisted afc tbe parade of tbe Royals, and took part in the firing of the feu de joie and the royal salute. The other members of the Manchester Rifles, under Captain W. A. L. Bailey and Lientenant Kirton, paraded at the barracks in Feilding, and marched to the old race course, where they also fired the feu, dejoie and paid the usual Royal compliments with three hearty cheers. The men were then dismissed and squads formed for class firing. In the meantime the sad news had been received of the death of Mr Macarthur, who was formerly captain of the corps, and held the position of honorary member until his decease. Naturally both officers and men were much shocked at this blow, which was so unexpected. As a tribute of respect for their late officer arrangements were at once made, and as many of the members as could be gathered together attended at the funeral to-day with side arms and the customary badge of mourning.
