MR MACARTHUR'S MEETING.
TO THE EDITOR OF THK STAR. Sir,— Was Mr Atkinson in earnest or was it satire towards Mr Macarthur when in proposing a vote of thanks to and confidence in him, he declared that a similar one which had been given to the Premier, when he spoke in Feilding, was only intended as an act of courtesey, and that the people did not mean what they said ; also that they regretted the Government could not discern between an honest expression of opinion, and the deceit of flattery. With such an avowal of deception accompanying the vote tendered to him it is to bo hoped Mr Macarthur will put a true estimate upon the motion, and will value it at best as a mere act; of courtesy similar to the one accorded to the Premier, and not upon any consideration to be misinterpreted iuto an expression of real feeling on the part of those who supported the proposition. I am, etc., S. Knight.
