Circus next Thursday night. Wirth's circus has been doing splendid business up the coast. Mr John Duthie, M.H.R., will address the electors in Wellington tomorrow. Queen Marguerite of Italy claims to have the sandals worn by Nero, llif tyrant. The parade of the Manchester Rifles appointed for Thursday next has been postponed until Friday al the usual hour. Notice is giyen that John Ruscoe will apply for a publican's license for a hotel in Pemberton, at the Kiwitea Licensing Committee. Frank Gay will take a coach down to Palmerston to-morrow for the Cowboy Show, leaving the Empire stables at 1.15. p.m. The prices for Wirth's circus are ad vertised to-day. First seats four slul lings, second seats three shillings, children half price. The Rev, Mr. Clover, some time ngo Primitive Methodist minister at Feilding, has, his many friends will regret to hear, lost another child from dephtheria. There was a very heavy rain storm in Wellington on Saturday, and a women named Mrs Susan Davis, was drowned at Makara. It is probable that Mr Scobie Mackenzie will be invited to address the electors in Feilding as well as in Palmerston North. We have to thank Mr G. Anyon for a complimentary ticket for the tea and public meeting to be held in the Wesleyan church, Birmingham, to-morrow. Mr A. C. Haycock, who has purchased the business of Mr Henry Curran, of Makino, as a dealer in firewood by advertisement to-day solicits a eontmuanee of public patronage. Criminal information has been sworn at Havelock, Manborough, against the Picton Press for libel alleged to be contained in a letter published in that paper. The case will be heard tcmorrow. A scientific journal states that a little sngar put on the hands with soap will greatly increase the lather and cleansing power, and will remove dirt, chemical &tains, etc. A train carrying the outward Aus* tralian mails was derailed at Amiens, the capital of the Department of Somme. Five vans were smashed, but the mails were not injured. On Saturday afternoon a tent, occupied by some men who are working for Messrs Younger and Laing, up the Pohangina, was destroyed by fire, by which they lost their provisions, clothes, &c. The men were away at work at the time. The London Times announces that experts pronounce Joshua Brothers' Australian brandy to be palatable, of high quality, and possessing all the genuine chi.acteristics of cognac, and (he paper lauds Messrs Joshua for de- \ eloping the industry. The funeral of the deceased daughter of Mr Flowers of Colyton took place on Sunday afternoon, and was very largely attended by the friends and neighbors of the family! Mr F. Pope was the undertaker tho Rev. Mr Carr officiated at the cemetery. Uncle William was talking with Lucy, his best little niece, about her birthday. He wished to know her mind upon a certain highly interesting subject, but preferred to get at it indiroctly, " Now, Lucy," said he in a casual manner, " if I were going to buy a doll for a little girl what kind of a one do you think she would like ?" " O, Uncle William, " answered Lucy with undisguised interest, " there is nothing like twins !" A married woman named Wrera, aged 44, whose husband is a miner at the Lyell, committed suicide in Nelson on Sunday. Her two younger children had been sent to school, when the mother, who had been attending Tent meeting and was much depressed, went out, bought a rope, fixing it to the rafters in back unoccupied room, hung herself. An inquest was held this afternoon, whon verdict was returned of temporary insanity caused by religious mania. The Spanish steamer Navarro, 3000 lons register, from Boston, U.S.A., with cargo and 400 head cattle on board, arrived at Gravesend after a passage of 24 dnys. Tho cattle on board were in charge of a number of cattle men, who were berthed in a forecastle provided for their use, which place was warmed by means of a coal fire in a " bogey " stove. On the first night out from Boston the weather was very cold and bad, and before going to sleep the men had made up the fire and shut the doors and ports up, with the result that seven of their number were found quite dead, suffocated by the gas fumes from the stove, and three others were only restored after prolonged efforts on the part of the oliicers and crew of the chip.
The public wealth in the United States is £208 per inhabitant, as compared with £247 in the United Kiugdom, £224 in France, and £140 in Germany. Owing to pressure on our space we are compelled to hold over a quantity of reading matter, including a report of a meeting at Waituna, and a couple of letters to the editor. We regret to announce the death of Miss Ellen Hitchman, which took place at the residence of her parents, Mr and Mrs Kitchman, Kimbolton Road, last night, after a long illness. We sympathise with the family on whom the hand of affliction has been heavily laid within Ihe last few years. The funeral will take place on Thursday.
