The Biter Bit

A young couple in Brooklyn, who had been keeping company two years, became engaged with the consent of all concerned, and looked forward with the customary supreme bliss to the con~ summation of their betrothal. Suddenly the betrothed maiden changed her mind and told her lover she would, not marry him. When he recovered his breath he bege^d for an explanation, but could act no other than that she hi.l decided to marry somebody else. Sorrowfully he left her and in the solitude of li'is chamber put on his thinking cap. The result was thnt the jilt received a formal note from him telling her that be would call on a certain evening for a final answer. He called, and met with a frigid reception. His affianced told him that her decision was irrevocable and handed him a package containing all his gifts to her. 'By joye !' he cried, * you'ro tbe best girl in Cite universe ! I feel as though a ton might have been lifted from my breast.' He grabbed tbe package and bis hat and made for the door. The g irl was petrified with amazement. ' What is the meaning of this ?' she stammered. • Why, it means,' he answered, ' that lam free. I tried my best to muster up courage to nst you to release me, but couldn't do it. I'll send your letters and everything but the ring. That I am afraid Cora will not give up.' ' And, pray, who may Cora be ?' was snapped out rather viciously. ' Oh, she's the girl I am going now to ask to mnrry me. She's a beauty. I'll send yr,u her picture and I'll give her the diamond carvings you havn returned to me.' His hand was on the knob when these words arrested him : 'If you attempt to go I'll scream, I want you to understa-.d that our engagement holds good. Don't go near that Cora ngain. lam going to marry you myself.' The nuptials will be celebrated at the time originally set.
