War in Dahomey
Another phase of the trouble between tbe King of Dahomey and the French I Eepublic is given by more recent telegrams. It would appear that the African protentate is not going to accept the position as laid down by tbe French without a struggle, and when he heard that the Chamber of Deputies in Paris had passed a vote to carry military operations into Dahomey, he warned the French that he will destroy Portonovo, (a French, town on the Slave Coast of Africa with a mixed population of 20,000) and all other of that nations settlements in the event of war. No doubt as the African troops have obtained a temporary advantage over the French forces, they will be encouraged to meet them again, to suffer certain defeat by the superior descipline and arms which will be brought against them, but in the meantime many thousands of persons may be given up to indiscriminate slaughter by a savage people whose delight in the shedding of human blood is proverbial.
