Volunteer Items
The parade of the Manchester Rifles ordered for this evening has been adjourned, to allow those who are members to be present at the Premier's address. The balance of the Kharkee uniforms and the felt hats have arrived. The price of the latter to the men will be 6s 6d each. Government have been informed by the War Office that the "Mark 2-303" Magazine rifle has been adopted as the infantry arm of the Imperial Service. Ministers are asked to state whether they have any intention of ordering a supply of the weapons during the present financial year. Every efficient volunteer in the colony will be delighted if the out-of-date Sniders now in issue are re-called within the year and the more modern arm be substituted in their stead. Sergt.-Major Bezar, formerly drill instructor for the Wanganui district, was a visitor to Feilding yesterday. It was a lucky thing after all the Nelson Encampment was not held, because it rained in torrents all Easter in Sleepy Hollow. Captain Fox, the commander of the New Zealand Forces, whose arrival at Albany we chronicled the other day, is spending a few days in Melbourne before coming on to his destination, because he thought it advisable to see the Easter manoeuvres of the Victorian Forces.
