The annual eight-oared boat race between Oxtord and Cambridge Universities was rowed to-day over the usual com-se on the Thames from Putney to Mortlake. Oxford winning by two lengths. In the 'Varsity race Oxford beat the record time at every point throughout the course. [Oxford has now won the race three years running, their total of victories being 26 to Cambridge's 22, The contest in 1887 resulted in a dead heat.] Sydney, This Pa?. Strathinoor and Grnaroch have eased a point in betting for the Sydney Cup, and are now at 5 to 1 and 6 to 1, respectively. Sydney papers state that the New Zealander, Sullivan, will be favorite in his sculling match for the championship of the world with Stanbury next month. Stiff running seems to be permitted with impunity in New South Wales, to be judged from the following trenchant remarks which I take from the ' Referee' : — " Horses are deliberately pulled meeting after meeting. Why they are ? is a question any sane man may ask. It does not deceive the majority of backers, if we may judge by the prices at which these ' stiffuns' start at the next time they run. The present condition of the turf is deplorable, and unless something be done speedily to punish the worst offenders, racing will become a mere game for blacklegs to play at. Half a dozen men and their horses warned off for a couple of years would have tho desired effect." — Dunedin Star.
