Miss Hewitt, formerly of Dunedin High School, but for the last seven years Principal of the Napier Girls' High School, died on Friday somewhat suddenly, though she had been in illhealth for some years. Miss Hewitt was an ardent social reformer, amongst other things objecting on sanitary ground to the burial of the dead. When her will whs opened it was found that she desired her body to be cremnted if possible, but in the absence of suitable appliances it was to be taken fo sea and sunk. Yesterday afternoon a steamer took the body six miles from shore where it was cornnutted to the sea, Dean i-lovell reading the burial service. Invebcabgill, April 9, Mr John Dalg/eish, at one time bank manager here, and afterwards a member of Murray, Dalgleish and Co., died this morning. He had been ill for some weeks, but was about town yesterday. Chbistchubch, April 11. Mr J. Bickerton Fisher, solicitor, writes to the Press, pointing out that in his opinion the Government have no power under the Land and Income Assessm J nt Act to compel people to make returns till after the 31st of March, 1893. :\fr Fereday, solicitor, also writes to the same paper expressing a similar opinion.
