Correspondence
THE LOST BUGLE.
TO THE EDITOR* OF THE STAR. Sir— ln last Tuesday's Stab I saw an article from an old 65th man, stating a detachment of the 65th relieved the 58th at the Lower Hutt camp, when the bugler . and seven men of the latter regiment I were killed by the Maoris. These men, ; I think, were killed in 1846, at which tame ! the 65th were in Chatham, England, and '. therefore took no part at the Hutt camp. It is true Captain O'Connell, of the 65th regiment, with a draft of his company, were the first of the 65th to land in New Zealand, but the 58th were not relieved until 1847, when all the 65th regiment arrived in Wellington from Auckland. With regard to the bugle, I believe it was recaptured from the Maoris at Porirua, with some arms, by the troops, assisted by the militia. What became of the bugle I cannot say. All the arms taken from the Maoris, with the arms used by the militia, were called in and stored in the Immigration Barracks on Thorndon Flat, but the bugle was not with the arms, that I can ti-uly say. I am, &c, James Wilson, Late Corpl. 65th Begiment, Company C. P.S. — There was a small detachment ol the 65th sent out to the Hutt, about 15 or 20 men, but this was long after the Maoris were put out of the Hutt. — J.W.
