Football

This will prove of interest to footballers :— A controversy is going On in some parts of Great Britain regarding- the Welsh system of four three-quarter backs, and as that system was adopted last year by some of the Christchuroh clubs, the controvers}' possesses a certain amount of interest to lovers of the game in the colonies. F. H. R. Alderson, of the Hartlepool Hovers, the international centre, has some valuable remarks to make upon the system, and his opinions are certainly entitled ' to respect. He says: — 'The great objection to this new system is thac it weakens your forwards, who will be over-run by the other nine, and so your three-quarterbacks will be left to save. The match at Hull (Yorkshire v. Durham) clearly provW thai, this is not the case, and thus broke down the strongest objection to | the new system, for cur eight, and at one time our seven, light forwards more than held their own against nine heavier and more powerful opponents. This match has convinced ! me of an idea I have had for some time, that nine men cannot vjei their force and strength concentrated round the ball, which of course is the great thing- in forward play, and [ believe if you get eight good workers on the bail they would be just as much use as 20 in the scrum.'
