The "Newall" Sheep-shearing Patent
• A trial of Mr Newall's sheep shear- I ing apparatus took place in Loudon lately. The mechanical details of the shear itselt are very difficult to explain, but there are points at which Mr Newall claims that his machine is far in advance of any of its rivals : —The lever required to work the cutter being' applied so that the pressure is reduced much below that oi other machines in use ; the adjustment of his friction- roller and race plate; the centre pivot, which is a ball bearing ; the large wearing surfaces at the driving point ; the casting of the main frame in one piece; so as to avoid the risk of bearings getting loose ; and it is affirmed that as many as sixteen of these machines can be driven by a single horse-«ear. The inventor intends forthwith introducing his machine to the test of practical experience in the Australasian colonies. Final specifications have been prepared and filed in all great sheep countries, and Mr Newall holds the conviction that tbe use oi several of tbe improvements claimed is essential to the construction ot a goodwearing, easily operai ed, and throughly efficient sheep shearing machine.
