Ocean Steamer Ashore near Timaru

[ PER UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION. ) Timaru, March 9. The S.s, Elginshire, an ocean steamer of 4500 tons, ran ashore nine miles from Timaru last night during a fog. Several tugs have gone to her assistance. She has 11,000 carcases of mutton, 500 tons of meat, and 300 bales of wool on board. This Dav. An attempt was made by tho tug Mana last night to pull the Elginshire off, but failed to move her. Tho tug Koputre arrived this morning from Dunedin and the Herald also. A combined attempt will be made at noon to-day. A crane is being rigged to sling the wool ashore. Both propellers are out of the water at low tide, and the engines are practically useless. The general opinion is she will not get off.
